Aotearoa. Land of the long white cloud. Pacific's Triple Star. New Zealand.

Whatever name you know it by, the world's southern-most group of islands is one of the most visually and culturally beautiful places on earth. Stunning scenery, crystal clear lakes and rivers, and world class entertainment make for an overall quality of life that is - to every New Zealander you speak to - unbeatable.

New Zealand is best known for its clean green image, and as soon as you set foot here you'll see why. On the outskirts of every city and town is lush bush and rolling hills - perfect for weekend warriors and young families alike to enjoy. As part of a dynamic, progressive culture, New Zealand's discerning urban population enjoys some of the best food and wine in the world (along with a range of entertainment that would make some New Yorkers green with envy!)

With long safe beaches and wide open spaces, New Zealand is a haven for young families. And for the more adventurous, there's an almost endless list of high-octane activities. After all, it's not called the adventure capital of the world for nothing…

New Zealand continually features highly in global "quality of life" lists, and as such, is one of the most sought after places on the planet to immigrate. With the opportunities now available through IBM, you can be here too.

Blue Fern to lead the way

The University of Canterbury in NZ will be the first research institution in the Southern Hemisphere to have an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer, putting it among elite research-led universities such as Harvard University, Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

'Blue Fern', as it's been dubbed by the University, will be one of the 25 most powerful supercomputers operating in academia worldwide. Its significant computing power will be available to researchers around New Zealand and will enable research never before possible in this country.

For example, researchers at the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch School of Medicine will be able to address a number of crucial clinical questions about stroke and diabetes, conditions that affect a large number of New Zealanders.

And, for the first time, they will be able to model blood flow and complex chemical reactions in the entire human brain, and mimic the interactions of the millions of nephrons that make up the human kidney, enabling insights not previously possible in New Zealand.

IBM in the community

IBM New Zealand was recently awarded the inaugural Robin Hood Foundation Social Hero Award for Education Partnership. The award was for IBM's 'KidSmart programme' - the donation of a specially designed computer unit, educational software and teacher training to early childhood centres, all of which have been designed to give pre-school children the opportunity to integrate information technology into their learning.

The Social Hero Award is the culmination of three years of investment in the education sector by IBM New Zealand. Since the KidSmart programme was established in 2004, IBM NZ employees have installed 268 computer packages in early childhood centres in socio-economically disadvantaged areas and have trained over 600 teachers in the use of information technology.

Energy goes green

Meridian Energy's new energy efficient office building, due to open on Wellington's waterfront in October, will have the greenest telecommunications solution in New Zealand. The IBM-led solution incorporates technology from Cisco and PIVoD and was chosen by Meridian because it met the tough requirements of the new, energy efficient building and enabled staff to contact anyone, anywhere.

The proposal put forward by IBM, Cisco and PIVoD had an emphasis on mobility, with 70 percent of staff using laptops rather than desktop computers and a number of 'touchdowns' for visiting staff. Employees will use mobile phones which are integrated with their 'desk phone' extensions - enabling greater mobility around the building.

The building will have wireless and fixed line IP Telephony which integrates with Meridian's new audio visual system, plus unified messaging integrated with Microsoft Outlook and Office tools (allowing employees to access voicemail, email, fax, voice and video from a single inbox).

Telephony, email, instant messaging and video conferencing will be delivered to employees' computers over one highly secure, IP network, helping reduce the need for company travel, without sacrificing face to face communication. Travelling less frequently will support Meridian Energy's carbon- neutral commitment and help staff be more productive.
